620-A Tom Springer's NEW Trawler Yacht launched in Canada.
Hi Bruce, This is Aaron, Tom's son writing to you. I've been
checking his email for him.
They left yesterday morning and were running in 20 foot seas, he said that the boat handled great. I talked to them last night and everything was still going fine (calmed down to 5 footers). Thanks, Aaron Springer Hi Bruce,
We finally got the boat home on the 19th of October. She is
beautiful and performed well on the trip from Nova Scotia.
Attached are a couple of pictures. She is beautiful and we are
very pleased with her design. I intend to invite Hal up to see her
when her systems are in order. Regards, Tom & Patty Springer

Voyager TY 620-B Hi Bruce, We sure enjoy full-time cruising & living aboard. We've cruised from San Francisco to British Columbia. This spring we are heading to SE Alaska for two years. Sonata is the hit of every anchorage and we are constantly giving tours. Regards, LEE SIMPSON Hi Bruce,
Going on three years of live aboard and haven't
regretted one minute It's been a great life on a great boat.
I've been asked to participate in a boat building seminar at the Trawler
Fest in June. Unfortunately we will be in Alaska by then. Sonata has
become famous as we get approached every where we go. The Passagemaker
article had a lot of readers. Have you seen any response from interested
builders?.
I see you've done some more writing. Do you plan to come out with a book
version? Probably would be fun to read even after building. I'm happy to hear the good news about the popularity of the trawler design. I've had thoughts of doing another one someday but we are just having to much fun with the cruising life. As I look back, the building of Sonata has been one of the great experiences of my life. I am very proud of her. I would like very much to review your writings on building boats. Thanks for being an important part of a great life experience and Thanks again for the great design and project, Lee Simpson NEW Photos and report on TY 620 SEE FULL REPORT ON THIS BOAT IN PASSAGEMAKER MAGAZINE .. Since we last talked, I spent about 3 hours with Lee Simpson in CA. His boat is impressive. Lee added a stern thruster which may be overkill but I liked his thoughts on it and think it a valuable addition. Regards, Butch Bruce's comment: Stern thrusts have a lot to recommend them. There is generous room available to provide accommodation for two couples plus all the facilities expected by today's cruising yachtsman. Trans-ocean capabilities are a feature of this design From TY 620 builder: Hi, By the way, the TY 620 - 62
foot trawler yacht of Bruce's design that we are currently building is coming along very
well. Just received the drawings ( for TY 620 ) and we are impressed
by the amount of detail on these. We have made copies and have our
guys studying them. We find these help the guys on the floor to understand
the assembly process and things go much quicker. The quality of the kit parts are the best we have ever seen, and as a result,
we are saving time in the build. At present, we have 9 welders/fitters working on the boat
in three teams. We have almost all of the plate hung in place and tacked
up. We
anticipate the seam welding will start within a few weeks as there are some details to
attend to. But we must say again, that we are very happy with the kit quality. Lee Simpson's comments to others ... "As we worked, more and more respect came to Bruce Roberts for his designs. Things that made no sense came to understanding as we flowed through the process" |
|
Hi Well, the day finally arrived, the kit is here and on our shop floor. The steel looks great, we are starting to sort it into piles of the frames and associated pieces. I think the guys in Holland did an excellent job of cutting as the edges of the plates are very clean and sharp with almost no bevel. This last point is important, as we find with plasma cut kits, if there is any bevel on the edges it tends to add= up and compound errors where multiple parts fit together. So, we are anticipating no problems at this stage. Hope you enjoyed the pictures Bruce (our Bruce) sent you, we will send more as we start assembling the kit. Merry Christmas all...Brian Good Morning Bruce and the best of the season to you and your family! We actually made good progress on Friday and managed to build most of the building frames as well as all of the jigs. We will build the mast in a way that it can be bolted on after the boat is out of the building. Yes, everything looks fine and we are sure the kit will assemble fast. Sincerely, Brian ( THIS KIT IS NOW COMPLETED, LAUNCHED AND HAS COMPLETED SUCCESSFUL SEA TRIALS ! ) |
| Bruce, I had reply from RYA on plan evaluations. They
have been very quick and say they have no concerns about suitability for RCD design
Category A. Nice compliment on the quality of your plan
information. Everything seems to be OK. They used Naval Architecture Services
LTD in Hampshire. LR SSC service group G6 (unrestricted yacht) .

| FROM Lee Simpson who is building a TY 620 B from our kit. Hi Bruce, Sorry for not writing sooner. We are really enjoying the project. I have a friend that comes to work on the boat in the evening just for the relaxation. We are almost finished welding the hull. We will build the house and pilothouse on a gig on the ground. I must remove for transport and feel there are benefits to building on the ground. I will lift into place before moving to make sure everything fits. We are making some changes from the original layout to better fit my needs. I have moved the stairs from the saloon to the staterooms aft and swapped positions with the pilothouse stairs. This will allow me room for a day head in the pilothouse. We've traded the amidships stateroom for a good sized head, pantry and shop/mechanical room. I will install all plumbing, electrical, day-tank, fuel management and heating in this room. I've moved the engine in place and plan to build a box similar to a sound shield on a generator around the main engine. Quiet is important to me. All tanks are in place. I plan a transom door to the lazarette from the swim step, through the engine room and into the mechanical room. hope to get my office gal to add more photos soon. Regards, Lee |
